Biography
Jean Dewasne, born in Hellemmes-Lille in 1921, is one of the masters of French constructive abstraction.
After extensive classical and musical studies, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he attended architecture workshops.
He then turned to painting and became an ardent advocate of abstraction. In 1946, he contributed to the creation of the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles alongside Auguste Herbin and received the Kandinsky Prize…
Work
Dewasne’s work combines visual arts, architecture, music, mathematics, urban planning and industry in a whirlwind of complex geometric shapes and bright, flat colours.
In search of a personal visual language, he abandoned painting in favour of technical and industrial materials…
Exhibitions
The Denise René Gallery organised his first solo exhibition in 1949, showcasing paintings of great formal rigour.
Today, his work features in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, and others.
Art constantly struggles against cultural and sensory alienation;
it operates outside the comfort zone.
